8th Digicel Schools Football Championship…
– Regions 3 & 5 commence campaigns Monday
Kaieteur Sports – Season eight of the Digicel Schools Football Championships commenced yesterday with eight exciting matches, which were contested at the Ministry of Education (MoE) and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Grounds, Carifesta Avenue.
Georgetown and East Coast were the two zones of Region 4 that leaped into action at the two venues. East Bank is the other zone that completes the lot.
At the MoE Ground, there were four victorious Georgetown teams while the NIS Ground saw four more winners; two East Coast winners and two more GT victors.
There were contrasting results throughout the day but West Ruimveldt stood out with its domination of the Institutehe of Academic Excellence which ended 12 – 0.
West Ruimvedlt were led by hat-tricks from Donovan Welcome (14’, 19, 40’) and Wayne Solomon 30‘, 46’, 50’), doubles from Malachi Wray (6’, 45’) and Shamar Griffith (47’, 48’) along with a goal each from Trevor Brent (28’) and Joshua Chance (49’).
In the other matches at MoE Ground, Tucville comfortably defeated Queenstown 5 – 0, Marian Academy trounced Ascension 7 – 0 while South Ruimveldt prevailed 5 – 4 on penalty kicks against East Ruimveldt after being deadlocked a 2 – 2 at the regulation time whistle.
Over at the NIS Ground in the other two Georgetown matches, Richard Ishmael sailed past Freeburg 7 – 0 and Christ Church humbled Queen’s College 2 – 0 while the East Coast matches saw Bladen Hall defeat Plaisance 5 – 1 while La Bonne Intention sank Beterverwagting 4 – 0.
On Monday, June 26, the tournament resumes with the commencement of the Regional Championships in Regions Three and Five as well as the continuation of the East Coast zone.
In Region 3, Essequibo Islands take on Zeeburg in the first match at 13:00 hrs, Patentia faces West Demerara at 14:30 hrs while Parika battles Leonora to wrap up the day’s proceedings. A total of 12 teams are competing for supremacy in this Region of the Championship.
Region 5 will host a double-header to commence their 11-team Regional Championship as Ash Education Trust goes up against Woodley Park from 14:30 hrs while No. 8 clashes with Rosignol, both to be contested at the Rosignol Community Centre Ground.
The East Coast zone will have a double-header at the Buxton Ground as Bygeval tackle Lancaster at 14:30 hrs then Golden Grove meets President’s College at 16:00 hrs.
