Kaieteur News – After completing her Caribbean Secondary Examination (CSEC), the idea of wanting to keep occupied, led to a business venture by Milcah Susanna Garraway, a proud Lindener.
Milcah is the owner of ‘Hotspot 212’ a business which offers non-traditional hotdogs as well as other delicious fast food.
The business is located at Lot 20 Burnham Drive, Wismar Linden.
‘Hotspot 212’ is opened from 10:00 hours to 18:00 hours, Monday to Saturday. On Sunday, the business only takes pre-orders.
During an exclusive interview with The Waterfalls, Milcah shared that since opening her business in August 2020, besides her day-to-day operation, she has catered for birthday parties, outings and other social events.
Her menu comprises of regular hotdogs, chili hotdogs, nacho cheese hotdogs, omelette hotdogs, chicken burgers, veggie burgers, loaded fries, regular fries, barbecue wings, burger combos, and hotdog combos.
The young businesswoman shared that her best sellers are the burger combo, the chili hot dogs and barbecue wings.
Moreover, Milcah said that throughout her business journey her mother has always been there to support her whenever help is needed.
“If I have a lot of orders, and it’s too much for one person to execute, my mother helps me, besides that, no one else.”
Milcah was born and raised in Linden. She graduated from the Christian-burg Wismar Secondary School and credits her passion for business and wanting to be self-sufficient to growing up around strong-women with the determination to achieve whatever they desired. She shared that after completing her CSEC exams, she started researching business ideas.
“I ended reading about food businesses and I saw an article about a food truck that only sold traditional hotdogs and it caught my eye,” she added that while the idea piqued her interest she kept brainstorming ways to make the business idea something more, “putting my own twist to it.”
Milcah shared that she did not immediately go into launching the business but began practicing to refine and perfect her hotdog making skills.
“I would make them and literally share them out for free at first and let my family members and sometimes even strangers judge the taste. I was given many good reviews over time. After taking time to practice I got started. I first spoke with my mother and she gave me the idea to add burgers and wings to the menu and she showed me her way of making those. I learned that from her and then we created a menu before launching the business.”
Milcah’s long term goal for her business is to expand it. At this point, she operates from her home, offering delivery and pick-up services. “I do not just want to expand in one place but I am aware that I would have to as they say ‘creep before I can walk’ so yeah I aspire to first bring a fresh experience of fast food to linden then I will look to take it further afield.”
Sharing some of her experiences since launching her business, Milcah said, “I’ve learned that I should always be patient and not be reactive but rather practice being calm as much as I can, I’ve learned while having my business extreme discipline is required for my long term success, because given that I am the one financially backing the business, I am required to stay committed, consistent and clear of distractions. I’ve learned that consistency in quality is important for longevity in business. I’ve also learned to manage my time better and well, making sure that I prioritize prepping well before the day of selling.”
Added to this, she shared that she has also learned to prioritize herself. Besides running her business Milcah said her routine involves Yoga, exercises, journaling, meditation, and other activities to keep her balanced.
“Honestly, I feel so blessed to be able to provide my customers with food they enjoy. I am also excited for the journey ahead because my vision is unmatched. I see my business being more than just an at home business but I aspire to build an empire for me and my generation.”
