Dear Editor,
In last Monday’s poll, the Opposition APNU recaptured the Buxton-Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council which it lost in the 2018 elections. APNU got 5105 votes with the PPP/C getting 4511 The governing party lost the NDC by a difference of 594 votes. In that NDC lies the PPP/C strongholds of Enterprise, Non Pareil, and Coldingen. The governing PPP/C had never won that LDC but won it in the 2018 LGE with 4605 votes compared to 3709 votes for APNU. This was a whopping 896 increase for the PPP/C over its rival in 2018.
What could account for the PPP/C losing in 2023? In Buxton-Foulis are the APNU strongholds of Buxton, Bachelors’ Adventure and Paradise. It could possibly mean that if the PPP/C made inroads to the APNU stronghold in 2018, then they returned to that party in 2023. Alternatively, the 896 voters who voted PPP/C in 2018 are PPP/C supporters and must have been apathetic in 2023 to not vote for the governing party. What could account for their apathy?
I had predicted in a letter (KN 5-4-2023 -“Closing Enmore, Enterprise and Paradise schools ill conceived”) that the Ministry of Education’s decision to send students from Enterprise, Enmore and Paradise all the way to Good Hope Secondary School would incur more traveling expenses, which would be burdensome to parents. I had warned that parents would vent their wrath in the LGE elections of 2023. Note well that with the closure of the Enmore factory, the majority of sugar workers have lost their jobs. The PPP/C strongholds are economically depressed. The Minister of Education took their strongholds for granted or did not understand the magnitude of supporters’ displeasure. Whatever the reasons for the PPP/C loss, it would be interesting to see what the Minister does to rectify the problem.
Respectfully,
Sultan Mohamed
