Dear Editor,
On two occasions over the past two weeks, I had cause to call the offices of the Guyana Water Authority in New Amsterdam to inform them about the dark brown colour of the water passing through a filter installed along a pipeline leading from an overhead tank to the building in which I reside.
I informed the female employee who answered the phone that I am being forced to change filters every 24 hours because of how quickly they become discoloured. The young lady promised to inform her superior, the Engineer at the Water Treatment Plant, of my complaint. Within a few days, a team of technicians arrived to investigate. I showed one of the employees the dark brown discoloured filter I had just removed and he speculated that the main lines may have become corroded and needed flushing out. He promised to report back to his superior, the Engineer.
One week has elapsed since this visit and nothing has changed. I called later to report the absence of any change in the discolouration and was told by the same female employee that she would again relate this information to the Engineer. It is approximately one week since that second exchange and the dark discoloured water continues running through my filters. This water is being supplied at a monthly cost by a supposedly modern Treatment Plant which should be providing treated water to the town.. Is the health of the township silently in jeopardy as a result of this dangerous breach of contract?
Yours faithfully,
D. Dacosta
