Kaieteur News – The newly constructed $585, 090,000 Abram Zuil Secondary School was commissioned on Thursday by President Irfaan Ali. Also joining the Head-of-State at the significant ceremony were Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, Regional Chairperson of Region Two, Vilma De Silva and other officials of the government and region.
In delivering the feature address, President Ali expressed gratitude to those who played a critical part in ensuring the completion of the facility.
He said that given the physical structure of the building, the school is set to be ranked in the top 10 percent of schools around the world. The President mentioned too that investment in education allows generational poverty to be reversed.
“Investment in education is generational and inter-generational and it allows generational poverty to be reversed because it gives persons in that generation that may have been born in unfortunate circumstances to have the opportunity to reverse that and create a new generation for intergenerational wealth,” he said.
Minister Manickchand in her brief remarks said that Abram Zuil Secondary was in a bad state but it still went on to perform exceptionally well. She noted the school has the highest matriculation rate in the Region. According to the minister, the school was scheduled to be fixed since 2013.
“Abram Zuil was in a bad state physically but they were still doing well, they were in a bad state for all of the time that the other people were in office and it didn’t get broken down and it didn’t get built back, when you say we love you, you must see action with that. We had said to you that since 2013 that we were going to build back Abram Zuil and it took five long years for us to come back in office, for us to start that again in 2020 and so when you hear we say we love you, it have meaning,” the Minister said.
She added too that through the government, the ministry is geared at ensuring that schools, whether on the coast or in the hinterland are equipped and properly built to deliver a high quality education in the country.
Kaieteur News understands that the $585 million school was built by Builder’s Hardware General Supplies and Construction who is a local contractor from the region.
This publication had reported too that the construction of the Abram Zuil Secondary School building was unable to reach its November deadline due to the delay of building materials for the project. The contractor was later given up to March month-end to finish the school. Work on the school began in 2021.
The new school is a double-flat ‘E’ shaped building, with the capacity of housing some 750 students.
The state-of-the-art building consists of science laboratories, a cafeteria, a multi-purpose hall, drama room, medical room, art and home economics rooms, as well as several fully air-conditioned offices. The school houses over 20 classrooms and soon to be installed elevator which will cater for learners will physical disabilities.
On Wednesday, the President had also commissioned a new $1.3 billion World Bank funded secondary school at Good Hope on the East Coast of Demerara.
