Kaieteur News – Construction of a new magistrates’ court and living quarters at Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD) will soon be constructed to the tune of $303M.
The contract has been awarded to Orion Engineering Inc. According to the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office, the contract is valued at $303,905,015.
Back in April, a total of eight contractors submitted bids for the project which was estimated to cost $319,231,900.
Following the bidding process, it was recently revealed by NPTAB, that of the eight contractors, Orion Engineering Inc. was deemed the most responsive bidder and was awarded the $303M contract on June 21.
In April, Kaieteur News had reported that the Supreme Court of Judicature would also build a court at Friendship, EBD at an estimated cost of $418M. A total of nine contractors had applied for that contract.
This publication understands that this year, the Judiciary was allocated some $4 billion for the further development of the judiciary system. At a re-commissioning ceremony for the Mibikuri Magistrates’ Court last year October, Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, had announced plans for the construction of the Friendship and Timehri courts among others.
The AG announced that new court houses are being constructed at Mabaruma, Region One and Vigilance, Cove and John and Mahaicony on the East Coast Demerara (ECD), La Parfaite Harmonie on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD) and also at Timehri and Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
Nandlall said at the time that government has its eyes on building a modern complex to be the headquarters of the judiciary. The headquarters, he detailed, will house all of the High Courts, the Court of Appeal and the Land Court. He pointed out that such investments are being made because access to justice is important as access to any other important service.
