Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s first-class opening batsman Matthew Nandu struck an impressive 107 not out for Kaieteur in the continuation of the 2023 Brampton-Etobicoke and District Cricket League 50-overs tournament.
In this Conference A fixture played last Saturday at Laurel Creek Park in Waterloo, Ontario, the elegant left-handed Nandu caressed ten fours and two sixes from 97 balls to help his team safely reach 206-3 in the 45th over replying to Phoenix’s moderate 205 all out off 49.3 overs.
The twenty-year-old Nandu, the son of former Guyana player Arjune Nandu, also represented West Indies at the International Cricket Council youth World Cup in the Caribbean early last year.
Nandu shared an unbroken, 72-run fourth-wicket stand with Arjuna Sukhu who contributed 37.
After Phoenix winning the toss and batted, the innings didn’t find much rhythm as wickets fell regularly on a responsive pitch.
However, Damajot Sekhon top-scored with 52 (7×4) and Gurpreet Toor offered brief resistance as well by hitting 40.
Miguel Nandu and Marcus Nandu grabbed two wickets each. Matthew Nandu, who has so far featured in six games for Guyana, had sent down ten off-break overs having conceded 41 runs and collected a wicket.
Matthew is a Canadian-born but also plays domestic cricket for Everest Cricket Club which is based in Guyana’s Capital: Georgetown. Matthew is also retained by Guyana Amazon Warriors for the forthcoming Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament.
Meanwhile, the Brampton-Etobicoke competition is expected to continue this Saturday with several more matches as six teams are participating in this year’s edition.
