Dear Editor,
Children are the most vulnerable and weakest members of society, to fight back against crime. It is government’s responsibility to protect their citizens, especially those who cannot fight back, either because they are afraid, lack the will, encouragement or resources to do so. It is shameful indeed for the president after learning of this serious allegation, to wait for the accused to hand in his leave of absence papers.
It is shameful that the attorney general upon hearing of this allegation failed to provide the proper legal advice to the president, that the right to do, was to send the accused on immediate leave, instead of waiting on public outrage.
A crime of rape can be proven in a court of law without DNA evidence however, unlike regular crimes, rape investigation needs to have investigators with experience who are specially trained to investigate, collect evidence and interviewing process. This is an allegation of a brutal rape against a child, if money is passed to make this alleged crime go away, the DPP has a responsibility to not only disregard the payoff, but to add an additional charge, as we are dealing with a child.
I believe that a thorough interview with the victim, her brother and people with helpful information, can determine the outcome of this incident. With her description of the room, the bed and other furniture present, maybe she noticed that the accused has markings on his body, such as scars or birthmarks. Did the police look for evidence in the room, such as her hair follicle which could still be on the bed sheet to this day?
