Kaieteur News – Forty-one-year-old Mayelin Cordova, a Venezuelan National, who is presently serving a six months sentence for operating a brothel, was on Wednesday charged with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons (TIP), Contrary to Section 3 (1) (i) of the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act, No. 2 of 2005.
TIP refers to a crime whereby traffickers exploit and profit at the expense of adults or children by compelling them to perform labour or engage in commercial sex.
Cordova of Byderabo Road, Bartica, Region Seven, appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Christel Lambert. She denied the charges that were read to her and she was remanded to prison. The matter was then adjourned to July 5, 2023.
The charges were brought against Cordova, by the Guyana Police Force’s Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters.
It was reported that between March 15, 2023 and April 30, 2023, Cordova, trafficked nine Venezuelan females from Venezuela to Guyana, and exploited them between Crusher Hill and Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni Mazaruni River, Region Seven.
The victims reported the matter to the police, and members of the TIP Unit and an investigation was launched. Based on the investigation, legal advice was given by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC, for Cordova to be charged with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons.
The police stated that in efforts to combat trafficking in persons, the TIP Unit will continue to work with other stakeholders, to conduct intelligence-led operations, spot inspections, awareness, and training in every region of Guyana.
Last week, Kaieteur News reported that within the first half of 2023, the GPF TIP Unit interviewed 244 alleged victims of human trafficking – 23 of whom are under the age of 18.
