…groomed her with plane tickets, money
Kaieteur News – Parents of another indigenous girl are now crying out for justice after a minister used plane tickets and money to groom their 16-year-old daughter into having sex with him.
She was underage when the minister started having a relationship with her and according to the parents it is statutory rape. They had reportedly attempted to intervene and take legal action against the official but the child who was 15 at the time refused to cooperate because she believed then that she was in love. The official however, abruptly ended the relationship and it had reportedly thrown the child into state of depression. The parents said the child at the time wanted to drop out of school and give up on her dreams of becoming a nurse. The victim’s cousin shared details of how the official groomed the child into his trap.
She said that the nightmare for their family began when the minister visited their village. “He invited her to where he was staying and she never made it back home until next morning”, the cousin said. The trend reportedly continued every time the official visited village until he started purchasing plane tickets for her to spend time with him in Georgetown. “The situation got worst when the minister sent a plane ticket for my cousin to come to Georgetown during the school term while she was doing SBA (School based Assessments), she added.
Due to her parents disagreeing with the relationship, the child would travel without their knowledge leaving them clueless and worried about her whereabouts. After arriving in Georgetown the child would then allegedly call the parents and tell them that she is safe with the government official. Her trips to Georgetown became more frequent until the relationship ended abruptly during this year.
The cousin alleged that the child found out that the official was cheating on her with other girls her age. During one of her trips to the city, she confronted the official and they had a fight which led to her returning to her village in tears. Kaieteur News was told that the child does not want to come forward but the parents are demanding justice because it has left their daughter in a state of depression.
