Kaieteur Sports – The intense rivalry for spelling ascendency took a decisive twist when several of the country’s notable players convened for the final match in tribute to the past president of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), Michael Carter, at the Chicken King Grill and Bar, Melanie Damishana, ECD, last Saturday, June 17.
Winslow Jacobs registered the biggest upset with a nail-biting one point victory over game favourite, Michael Carter, before notching up a flawless 5 points with a positive spread of 307 to capture the overall honours. Roy Sharma rose from the ashes to register 4 games and a positive spread of 81 for the second-place slot while Carter, who also lost to Curtis Liverpoole, had to be content with a 3rd place finish after amassing 3 points and a positive spread of 225.
Jacobs signaled his intention from the onset when he disposed of Joel Blair by a spread of 126. The 2nd round encounter against Carter was indeed nail-biting as firstly one, and then the other player assumed the ascendency. In the end, Jacobs held his nerve and barely manage to eke out a one-point victory over his enterprising foe. Buoyed by the victory, Jacobs went on to dispose of Curtis Liverpoole (92), Carlton Murray (68), and Robert Williams (120).
Roy Sharma’s persistence eventually won out and he ended the tournament with 4 points and a positive spread of 81. His victims included Kamta Ramnarine (48), Joel Blair (22), Maurice Munro (54), and Curtis Liverpoole (81) while Carlton Murray halted his winning streak by a spread of 95.
Michael Carter did not fare as well as on the two previous occasions but managed to dispose of Michael Benjamin (119) and Robert Williams (8). However, following the nail-biting encounter with Jacobs, he also surrendered his 4th round sitting against Curtis Liverpoole (28) before closing off with a decisive victory over Ramnarine.
Meanwhile, the organizer of the tournament, Carlton Murray congratulated the respective podium finishers while noting that the tournament was extremely competitive. He had special words for Mr. Carter whose dominance of the 2 previous tournaments was indeed outstanding. Jacobs was also praised for his remarkable performance and Murray also voiced his appreciation for Jacobs’efforts at providing a fitting venue at a very short notice.
For his part, Carter also noted the high standard of the tournament and urged the players to continue practicing their game to facilitate a return to, and even surpass the standards of yesteryear. He has since returned to the USA. Meanwhile, the next tournament is tentatively set for Enterprise at a date to be announced shortly.
