Dear Editor,
The leaks of a letter in social media regarding the allegations of grooming a young girl and eventually molestation by a government minister caught them by surprise, but it caused an explosion that made everyone aware of things that were unknown to many in the public. In addition, posts also started surfacing that allegations of similar nature were made since 2022 against the same minister but were ignored and now few are coming forward to tell their stories. Interestingly, many of the minister’s colleagues are aware of his obsessions and choose to turn a blind eye to his actions. Seeing him volunteer to go on administrative leave doesn’t convince me that any prosecution would follow, based on the outcome of the investigation. Such is the nature of things in Guyana. Rich people, politicians, and those well-connected are prone to escape justice in Guyana, which tells us sickeningly that, children are not safe from paedophiles in Guyana.
Similar incidents as such surface before, and eventually the story dissolves, leaving those bold enough to come forward embarrassed and rejected for their efforts. Editor, a few years ago, I spoke to a senior government official attached to the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs about the situation regarding Amerindians, especially the young women, and to my amazement, the official who is also an Amerindian, told me that is their way of life and they accustomed to that. Apart from that, I have had interaction with others and monitored those showing an interest in Amerindian’s well-being, and based on their actions, I am [convinced] that they are only interested in gaining for themselves, family, and their powerful portfolio. The advantage taken against the young Amerindian women/girls is nothing new – some of the ministers and officials mostly go after the underage ones. Most politicians, NGOs, officials, etc. visiting the Indigenous villages are aware of the villagers’ economic situation and would flaunt their wealth, authority, and influence to lure the underage girls into their traps. Some get assistance from elders seeking favours or positions to coerce the young girls to satisfy the people’s lust.
Finally, Editor, whilst there have been various allegations being made against the present President and Vice-President, I have never heard of any sexual allegations being made against these two gentlemen, which is very remarkable, and I sincerely hope they ensure thorough investigations are conducted and appropriate actions being taken to prevent similar actions from reoccurring and the embarrassment it causes the party. Sexual exploitation is not occurring against Indigenous women alone, there are many young women and some older women who are forced into performing sexual favours or facing some sort of sexual harassment at the workplace mostly by their peers/management/owners to secure their jobs. Whilst many agencies supposedly exist to protect women, they are extremely silent on issues, unless exploded and the public becomes aware. Fortunately, I interact with various types of people and heard some horrific acts being taken against mostly young women working, some are even pointed out, and many people know of the acts, which is extremely sad. When will justice be served against the guilty rich and well-connected in Guyana?
Regards,
Sahadeo Bates
