Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) 2023 National Championship continued on Sunday with its Master’s race. This exhilarating competition covered a staggering distance of 98.97 kilometers (97.5 miles), commencing at Carifesta Avenue and taking the riders along the picturesque East Coast Highway. The course led them all the way to Halfway Tree, a pivotal point near the center of Georgetown Rosignol Highway at Perseverance (Mahaica), before culminating back at the starting point.
The rain-soaked skies and overcast conditions did little to dampen the spirits of the road masters who had come prepared to deliver an awe-inspiring performance. With each cyclist eager to test their mettle at the second segment of the GCF’s 2023 National Cycling Championship. However, in the end, Robin Persaud representing the KFC Evolution clinched the prestigious title of Guyana’s 2023 National Road Race champion, completing the challenging feat with a remarkable time of 22:33:17.
Meanwhile, the Master’s race was packed with excitement, initially, the race stated with a tight-knit group of riders departing from Carifesta Avenue. They formed clusters as they embarked on their journey along the East Coast Highway. Upon reaching Halfway Tree, they made a breathtaking return to the starting line, bringing the excitement to a crescendo.
The breakaway featured four exceptional riders, as Robin Persaud and his teammate, Seagun Hubbard, representing team Evolution, showcased their remarkable skills alongside Kwame Ridley and his teammate, Alexis Mendes, from team Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycle Club (KARCC).
As the race progressed, Robin Persaud and Alexis Mendes seized the opportunity to surge ahead, leaving a small group of riders trailing behind. In a relentless pursuit, Paul Choo-wee-nam bridged the gap and caught up with Ridley and Hubbard, further intensifying the competition.
The race reached its climax, as the riders approached the homestretch, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. In a display of incredible speed and stamina, Robin Persaud of Team Evolution unleashed a powerful sprint, triumphantly crossing the finish line in first place, followed by Alexis Mendes in second-place, while Kwame ‘Keyman’ Ridley of KARCC secured a commendable third-place finish.
