Kaieteur Sports – The One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast tournament was launched yesterday at the RS53 RestoBar and Lounge at Amazonia Mall, Providence, and set to bowl off officially from July 29-30.
Some 32 teams will be playing in a knockout format and vying for a first place cash prize of G$1 million while second place team collects $300,000.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Kashif Muhammad, NSC vice-chairman Cristy Campbell, former Guyana and West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, ex-national cricketer Steven Jacobs and title sponsor Kares Engineering representative Natasha Persaud were present at the event.
Muhammad during his feature address pointed out that the tournament represents a good initiative as it will incorporate family and Sports as well as entertainment.
The NSC Chairman said the tournament has potential to become a mainstay on the NSC’s/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports’ calendar of activities. He further threw his support behind the supporters as well as the teams while thanking the sponsors for making the huge step in ensuring the event makes a historic debut.
Jacobs, a former national cricketer, said the concept embraces a more wholesome aspect of cricket as it makes for a more nostalgic moment. The former all-rounder spoke on how the likes of Sunil Narine mastered various techniques of spin bowling by virtue of playing tons of Windball cricket.
Organizers also confirmed that a number of team’s have already signaled interest in playing. Team Mohamed’s will be sponsoring the Moruca team who will also be a part of this historic event.
