Kaieteur New – For over 20 years, daughter of the soil of the village of Nabacali, Eslene Shockley has been putting a smile on the faces of thousands of people across the world with her charitable and humanitarian ventures through her NGO Caring for Others (CFO).
CFO was birthed out of her desire to reduce poverty internationally but most importantly in her home country, Guyana. In Guyana, she has proudly sponsored scores of food clothing and toy drives, monetary assistance and last week launched the CFO micro financing loans for farmers in Linden. Shockley said when growing up, her family found it difficult to get by and she is cognizant that many families are still experiencing the same thing, so it is her duty as a philanthropist to pay it forward from what God has blessed her. “Not everybody has the necessary resources to move forward in life and when I look and I see the things happening to Lindeners and around Guyana, I wanted to be a beacon of support, when I think of my mom how she would go to the coconut oil factory and grate coconut for 25 cents and save her money to buy two cows so she could have extra to survive but we just didn’t had it,” she expressed with emotions.
Shockley said she decided to dedicate her life to philanthropy through her NGO which operates in several countries. She said she started the NGO with only USD $25 and today it is a putting a smile on the faces of thousands. “If I can give a helping hand, that is what my life is about,” she said. Shockley said she was motivated to start the micro financing loan because she realised that sometimes liquid cash is needed more than a hamper.
On Monday, four persons received financing to improve their poultry rearing and shade houses. One of the recipients broke out in tears while another’s repayment was waivered completely by Shockley after learning of his struggle. “I know what it is like for her to be raising grandchildren and to not having anybody to help, just having a few chickens to do the best she could, or to get the children to school…it is not easy.” Shockley said as long as she has the health and strength, she will continue to help families. She encouraged persons experiencing financial challenges to turn to the soil to get that extra assistance for themselves. She encouraged residents to have faith, not give up though times are hard. On Monday, Shockley also distributed hampers to vulnerable elderly person in Linden and toys and educational packages to nursery school students.
