Kaieteur Sports – “The aim is to play the game,” was the declaration of former National Scrabble king, Michael Carter, as he added another prestigious accolade, the second in as many weeks, to his bulging cabinet of achievements. The event was a specially organized tournament by a team of scrabble enthusiasts, led by Carlton Murray, at the Stanley Griffith Hall, Perth Village, Mahaicony, ECD, last Thursday afternoon. Carter finished with 3 points and a positive spread of 172.
Randall Gibbons suffered a convincing loss to Carter (100) but later avenged that loss by a spread of 39. Winslow Jacobs also disrupted Carter’s flow, defeating him by a spread of 55 to restrict him to his final score. Indeed, the tournament was highly competitive with several of the competitors accruing 3 points apiece with the respective spreads as determinant factors. They are Michael Benjamin, Jacobs, and Gibbons.
The highly competitive 5 rounds affair saw Carter notching up victories over Carlton Murray (90), Michael Benjamin (99), and Randall Gibbons (100). However, Gibbons returned to take the rematch by a spread of 39 but by then Carter had attained an unsurmountable spread, tightening his hold on the top prize.
Meanwhile, the organizer of the event, Carlton Murray, reiterated that the objective of the tournament is to hasten the reinstatement of the game. He reminisced of the hard work of the early pioneers like himself, Benjamin, his departed wife, Yvonne, veteran player, Randall Gibbons, and the myriad of others that have worked tirelessly to establish the sport locally. He further lauded the input of Carter, a former national champion, Abigail McDonald, the current national champion, and Fred Collins, also a former national champion. “These are the trailblazers but we are currently aspiring to engage each other with the aim of reinstating the game to its rightful position among the other disciplines,” Mr. Murray emphasized.
The competitors had scheduled another event in Melanie, Damishana, ECD over this weekend at Jacob’s business place.
