Kaieteur Sports – Paruima completed an intriguing campaign against five other teams to be crowned the inaugural champion of the Petra Organisation’s Upper Mazaurni Under-18 Inter-Village Football Tournament, which took place over consecutive days from June 11 – 15 at the Edwin United Sports Club.
The tournament, which also had the support of Trophy Stall and MVP Sports, concluded on Thursday evening as Paruima held their nerves to defeat Kamarang, 3 – 2.
Paruima’s Kimron Thomas, the tournament’s highest goal scorer, drew first blood for his side in the 15th minute but Raydon Krammer found the equalizer five minutes later from the penalty spot. In the 36th minute, Kamarang were elevated to the lead with Krammer’s second goal as the side led at the half.
When play resumed, Paruima made it a leveled game once again when Arlindo Williams found the back of the net in the 65th minute.
However, with the nail-biter approaching the regulation time whistle, Thomas completed a double in the third minute of injuries and stoppages time (90’+3’) – a goal that wrote them into the history books.
The Milo Under-18 Champion, Waramadong, had to settle for fourth after they were outplayed by Jawalla, 4 – 2, in the third-place showdown.
Bevon Jones (6’ & 58’), Didan Hunter (34’) and Lebron Hunter (60’) were responsible for Jawalla’s goals that led to victory while Leon Larson (12’ & 58’) scored twice for his side in a heart-rending defeat.
On Wednesday, both semifinal matches were decided by a penalty shootouts as Kamarang and Waramadong played to a 1 – 1 stalemate then prevailed 3 – 1 in the shootout, while Paruima and Jawalla were deadlocked at 2 – 2 before the former won 6 – 5 in sudden death.
