Kaieteur News – Relatives of Romesh Peters, the 57-year-old fisherman of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, Berbice man who died on Monday, June 12 said that he died after a wooden post fell from a shed hitting him.
According to Peters’ daughter, Pamela, her father and her brother Vijai were arguing with each other on Monday night when the incident occurred. The woman explained that her father was displeased with the manner in which Vijai treated his wife.
“Yesterday my father and brother had an argument. The daughter-in-law complained that my brother behaving bad and my father accept the complaint and he tell my brother to leave the girl alone and that he gonna bring the girl out on the street and he gonna have his wife,” Pamela explained.
She disclosed that her father told her brother to leave and she then advised her father to return to their yard “and stop fret behind my brother”. Upon Peters’ return to the yard, in the presence of his daughter-in-law, he reportedly held on to a wooden post that was holding up the shed attached to the house and the post reportedly loosened from its position and fell on him.
“Me holla for me father and he go and hold on pon the post underneath the shed and suddenly me see the shed loose off with the post and me father fall down on the ground. By the time he call me for a cup of water and I carry the cup of water, he done lie down on the ground,” the distraught woman told Kaieteur News.
According to the Pamela, at no point did her brother physically attack their father.
“My brother did not lash my father, I swear on my four children, they did not argue or touch each other more than on the street because meh brother nah enter this yard here and come in…that me can say he rush my father, he deh outside and he deh argue that he want he wife…” Pamela recalled.
However, police had detailed that the incident took place on Monday at approximately 19:30hrs at the aforementioned address.
It is alleged that the man and his son were engaged in an argument on the street in front of their home. At some point, the fisherman left and ventured back into the yard. Neighbour’s told police that shortly after Peters entered the yard, they heard a noise and when checks were made, they saw Peters lying on his back, with injuries to the left side of his head.
A wooden 2×4 post that was holding up a shed attached to the house was also found near the fisherman’s body. He was picked up and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Vijai was taken into custody for questioning in relation to the incident as police continues its probe into the man’s death.
