Kaieteur News – The township of Anna Regina located in Region Two recorded a 37% voter turnout at Monday’s Local Government Elections (LGE).
According to the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) office in Region Two of the 11,339 eligible voters, only 4,219 persons voted representing 37% of the town’s voting population.
Anna Regina’s Returning Officer (RO) Roxanne Smith told Kaieteur News that residents of the Region did not view LGE as important enough. She said many persons described LGE as “small elections” and failed to treat it with equal importance as General and Regional Elections.
Notwithstanding, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) has overwhelmingly won the municipality of Anna Regina. The party secured 3,657 votes while A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) secured 505 votes.
The Anna Regina Town Council consists of eight seats that derive from its eight constituencies; Walton Hall to Three Friends. Of the eight seats, seven have been the PPP/C has won seven while the APNU won one seat.
Anna Regina is considered not only the central point in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region but also the economic hub. Over the years, the economic landscape within the Anna Regina town has seen tremendous improvement as the private sector continues to pump finance into the local economy.
