Kaieteur News – A 13-year-old boy child labourer was on Monday crushed to death by his employer’s canter at Adventure, Essequibo Coast, Region Two. Dead is Rovin Mark Williams. Kaieteur News understands that the incident occurred at about 18:30h Monday evening.
At the time of his death, Kaieteur News understands that Williams was working on his employer’s property. Reports are that Williams would usually aid in loading and offloading the businessman’s canter, and was walking behind the canter when suddenly the businessman reportedly reversed. The teen was reportedly crushed by the canter and received injuries to his upper body.
Williams’ 19-year-old sister Rolisha Williams told Kaieteur News that she received news of her brother’s accident while she was at home. She said a neighbour informed her that the lad was taken to the hospital.
“A neighbour close to we contacted me and said go at the hospital, that my brother at the hospital. I went and about an hour after I reach, a doctor come out and said ‘he [my brother] deh bad and they gotta rush he Georgetown.’ before they could’ve rush, he though he already dead at the ICU,” Rolisha said.
Relatives told this publication that the child suffered several severe injuries which include a fractured skull, dislocated jaw, and a broken right hand and crushed chest.
Reports are that Williams is the youngest of five children, and lived with his mother, Alveena Williams, at Onderneeming Sandpit, Essequibo Coast. This publication was told that the single mother would usually work in the interior for months at a time, to support herself and children. At the time of the incident, the boy’s mother was not at home, and the minor was left in the care of his older siblings, the eldest of whom is 21-years-old.
Rolisha, who spoke with Kaieteur News earlier, disclosed that her little brother would do ‘small-small hustle,’ which ranged from weeding to loading canter trucks.
Monday’s incident occurred as the world observed World Day against Child Labour.
