…after lashing colleague to head with AK-47 magazine
Kaieteur News – A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank was on Monday shot dead by a colleague during a fight at Camp Stephenson, Timehri.
Dead is 24-year-old Tevon Daymon, a Private attached to 21 Artillery and of Lot 198 Block X Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara (WCD). He had allegedly lashed his colleague to his head causing severe injuries before he was shot down in a hail of bullets from an AK-47 rifle.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the 25-year-old suspect was armed with the AK rifle and 30 matching rounds and had discharged 27 rounds in Daymon’s direction.
In a statement, the GDF expressed condolences to the family of Daymon who died at 07:45hrs at the Diamond Hospital. The GDF said the incident occurred at approximately 04:51hrs at Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri.
According to the GDF, preliminary investigations revealed that Private Daymon was shot by another rank while the two were performing security duties. He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he later died. The GDF noted that the matter is presently being investigated by the Guyana Police Force and the suspect is in police custody. “This appears to be an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall discipline and professionalism of our ranks,” GDF said.
It noted that a Board of Inquiry will be convened to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Private Daymon. “The Chief of Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, Officers and Ranks extend condolences to the parents and family of the late Private Tevon Daymon and will ensure that all necessary support is given to the family at this time,” they expressed.
For its part the Guyana Police Force said Damon was attached to 21 Artillery Company and resided at Block X Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara. The suspect the police said has since been arrested. Enquiries revealed that the victim and the suspect became involved in an argument and the victim allegedly removed the magazine from the rifle he was carrying and hit the suspect to his head, causing him to receive injuries before running away. The suspect, who was armed with an AK rifle and 30 matching rounds, discharged 27 rounds from his rifle in the victim’s direction causing the victim to receive injuries and fall to the ground.
The victim was escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Wilson at 07.09hrs. The body was escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting PME. The suspect was handed over to police and is assisting with further investigations
Kaieteur News understands that the two soldiers had an argument which led to him being lashed to his head by Daymon. Reacting to the assault, the rank opened fire on Daymon, hitting him several times as he tried to flee the bullets. Video recording which appeared online showed several bullet holes in a wall at the army base. A photograph also appeared with a gaping wound at the middle of the shooter’s head.
