Kaieteur Sports – Guyana squash team’s campaign 24th Pan American Qualifiers in Cartagena, Colombia, ended at the quarter finals stages. Guyana’s Men and Women had mixed results throughout the week-long tournament which concluded on Saturday, seeing the Guyanese squash players having early departure in the Singles division. Fortunately, they were able to bounce back in the Doubles and Mixed Doubles categories.
Although having impressive displays in the Doubles and Mixed Doubles categories, which ultimately booked them three spots in the quarter finals, the men met with a strong USA side, while the women’s doubles and the mixed doubles teams met with the Argentineans. Unfortunately, the Guyanese men and women teams’ chance of qualifying for the Pan Am Games later this year in Santiago, Chile, was cut short on Friday following losses in their quarter finals encounters.
Meanwhile, in the men’s quarter-final match on Friday, Guyana men’s doubles team, represented by Alex Arjoon and Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, encountered a strong pair from the USA, Timothy Brownell and Spencer Lovejoy. Despite their valiant efforts, the Guyanese duo fell short, with a score of 8-11, 11-6 and 11-6 in favour of the Americans.
The women’s, on the other hand, comprising Ashley Khalil and Taylor Fernandes, then battled against Argentina’s Valentina Portieri and Pilar Etchechouri. Unfortunately, the women’s team couldn’t maintain their earlier momentum and lost the match with a 2-0 scoreline. Over in the mixed doubles division, Nicolette Fernandes and Jason Ray Khalil also lost to Argentina’s Antonella Falcione and Miguel Pujoi. Despite their fighting efforts, they failed to secure a spot in the semi-finals, succumbing to an 11-8, 11-4 defeat to conclude their 2023 campaign.
