2023 ExxonMobil Boys and Girls U14 Championships…
– Bartica Boys, President’s College Girls stand in their way
Kaieteur Sports – The script of the 2023 ExxonMobil Boys and Girls Under-14 Championships has almost been completed following the semifinal rounds which took place on Sunday at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground, Carifesta Avenue.
On Sunday, the final eight teams in both Divisions were on show as the finalists claimed their spots as did the teams that will be competing in the third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place showdowns when the Petra-organised event concludes on Saturday, June 12, at the same venue.
These 16 teams endured two consecutive days of matches which started with the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
The female Division was the first to have its finalists confirmed when Waramuri Top defeated Bartica, 3 – 1, and President’s College triumphed over Tucville 2 – 0 in the semis.
This means the new female Champion will be the victor of the finale between Waramuri Top and President’s College while Tucville and Bartica will have to contest the third-place playoff.
Before that, Marian Academy and New Central High advanced to the fifth-place playoff as they defeated Ann’s Grove and Charlestown in matches that ended 2 – 1 and 2 – 0, respectively. Charlestown and Ann’s Grove have been slotted in the seventh-place showdown.
In the Boys’ Division, both nail-biting semifinals went down to dreaded penalty shootouts to decide who moved on to the finals of the Championships’ fourth edition.
When the dust settled, ecstatic reactions from players and supporters of Waramuri Top and Bartica filled the arena as they triumphed over New Central High and Bush Lot, respectively.
Bartica and Bush Lot battled to a goalless stalemate which led to the penalty shootout where Bartica prevailed, 4 – 3.
In the other semi, their battle featured a goal from each side with Waramuri Top scoring first before New Central High equalized to force penalties. It became even more thrilling when the shootout proceeded to sudden death; New Central High was the first to miss, which gave Waramuri the win.
The other two matches in the Boys’ Division saw Christianburg/Wismar sink Chase’s Academic Foundation, 4 – 2, while Westminster humbled Patentia with a 4 – 0 score line.
When the curtains close on the event, the victors in the two categories cart off with the championship trophies along with $300,000 towards a school project, while the second, third, and fourth place finishers will have to settle for $150,000, $75,000, and $50,000, respectively, all for a school initiative, along with the respective trophy.
This tournament is sanctioned by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) with support from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) and MVP Sports.
