Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – While Lowenfield had his ways and unfortunately his exit at GECOM is marred with the 2020 elections controversy, his management abilities and competence was far superior to what currently obtains.
Recently, the Commission said that it is all prepared for the local government elections, I don’t believe that. There’s a lot of frustration to get there due to poor leadership at the Secretariat. It seems as if there is a move to do things differently from Lowenfield, but in the process, the good practices are removed. Staff are inadequately trained and there is a lack of resources.
Despite having a mega budget, the Secretariat is approaching every spending in a very skimming way. Had PPPC been in opposition, they would have made a big deal over any transgression. Today, because their supported ACEO, DCEO and CEO govern the Secretariat, in their view nothing can go wrong. My neighbor, who is employed for the elections, says that to get the letter from GECOM was a lot of back and forth, while the training and meals were way below the usual standards.
No spinning can change the fact of what happened at the Disciplined Services voting. Some officers given their posting will not be able to vote if they are posted a far distance from their polling center.
Staff are afraid of victimization so they wouldn’t utter a word. In silence, they are complaining bitterly about the management at GECOM. This was evident at the packing of ballot boxes. As a polling agent, I felt sorry for them, listening to their whispers. They are underpaid and have to work long hours.
GECOM needs urgent reform; it’s the only way to help the Secretariat.
Regards
Party Agent
