Jagdeo to improve lives of impoverished families by creating jobs, training them
Kaieteur News – With a large number of Guyanese still impoverished in an oil rich country, shortchanged by a bad Exxon deal, the government is now working towards improving their lives through job creation and training.
Reluctant to renegotiate a better oil deal,
Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo
Jagdeo explained his government’s job creation plan for improving the livelihood of poor families at his party’s press conference held at Freedom House on Thursday.
With his party hoping for a landslide victory at today’s local government elections, Kaieteur News asked him to explain how he will uplift these families out of poverty apart from giving them cash grants, should they vote for the PPP/C (Jagdeo’s Party)?”.
In his response, Jagdeo said, “So the cash grant was not designed to uplift people out of poverty as you think, it’s the jobs and the training and the expanding of the economy that will do that”.
Jagdeo explained that his government is working to ensure that poor families are first trained, retooled then granted jobs that are created.
He noted that government has already begun the process of creating jobs to improve the lives of impoverished families.
“The 14,000 (part-time) jobs went to poor people, a lot of women who are not working, the same people you are talking about, many are single parents so now that they can take care of their children”, Jagdeo said.
Another job creating initiative by the government according to Jagdeo, is having these poor individuals clean drains in their respective communities.
“And then job creation in these communities itself – until we can move people through more training- that is why a lot of work that we are giving out, we are giving it back to the community. You do community type of infrastructure and involvement, people are cleaning their own drains so they get some employment opportunities”, the VP added.
