Kaieteur Sports – In what was undeniably a show of raw grit and impeccable word-forming skills, former National Scrabble Champion, Michael Carter, amassed an impeccable 5 points and a positive spread of 538, spelling his way to the top prize in a specially organized tournament among other top players at the ‘Flavors,’ Charlotte Street, Georgetown, last Saturday afternoon.
Devon Dublin chalked up 4 points and a positive spread of 237 to finish in second place while Winslow Jacobs completed the podium positions after amassing 3 points and a positive spread of 347.
Carter, who has since migrated to the United States of America, is currently back home on holiday and a committee, headed by another national player, Carlton Murray, organized the tournament in his honour. The former national champion commenced his journey to the top with a close win over Kamta Ramnarine (20). He then followed up with a comprehensive victory over Roy Sharma (106) before sweeping aside Jacobs (144) in the third sitting. Carlton Murray was Carter’s 4th victim and he was disposed of by a spread of 95. Wayne Cave fared no better than his predecessors and he went down to Carter by a spread of 73.
Dublin has always proven to be a ‘silent assassin’ and his performance, which earned him the second place slot, was confirmative of the sobriquet. He defeated Curtis Liverpool (76), Robert Williams (90), Jacobs (93), and Ovid Williams (59) while Jacobs’ podium position came at the expense of Michael Benjamin (171), Wayne Cave (88), and Kamta Ramnarine (255). He faltered at the hands of eventual champion, Michael Carter (144) and Devon Dublin (93).
Meanwhile, shortly after receiving his treasured accolade, Carter delivered a pep talk to the participants. He congratulated the organizers and voiced the hope that the tournament would serve as an effective bolster to the resuscitation of the sport. The charismatic player observed the high quality of play at the tournament and urged the organizers to press on in their efforts to establish the game as a force among the other disciplines.
Meanwhile, the head of the organizing committee, Carlton Murray congratulated Mr. Carter and the other podium finishers on their respective victory even as he noted the competitiveness of the participants. Mr. Murray voiced an objective of resuscitating the game to its former standard even attracting other participants. He disclosed that plans are in train for another tournament shortly and urged players to continue practicing their game.
