Kaieteur Sports – The National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown was officially opened on Friday through a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCY&S), the National Sports Commission (NSC), and the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA).
The event drew a significant crowd, comprising sports enthusiasts, former national players and current tennis players, and even a few prospective tennis players and other influential personnel, all witnessed the remarkable achievement.
The inauguration was organized by Christy Campbell, the newly elected President of the GTA, also present at the commissioning were President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) Godfrey Munroe, Minister of Sports Charles Ramson Jr, Director of Sports Steve Ninvalle and Assistant Directors of Sport Melissa Dow-Richardson and Frankie Wilson.
During her address, President Campbell gave a brief overview of the GTA, and also warmly welcomed the renovation and revitalization of the facility. She expressed her sincere appreciation to the Minister and his ministry for fully financing the project.
Campbell emphasized the joy of witnessing the realization of a promise made by the Minister, a mere fourteen hours after he assumed office.
The upgrades to the centre encompassed resurfacing the courts, as well as the addition of new restroom facilities, stands, and lighting, significantly enhancing the venue. This investment also came at an opportune time, particularly with the One Guyana 2023 GTA Open Tennis tournament scheduled to commence in just two weeks.
Meanwhile, speaking at the ceremony Minister Ramson mentioned that, he is pleased to see with what they (the Ministry, NSC and GTA) were able to accomplish together, which is also an ethos of his vision for sports. Stating, “I would like to express my gratitude to the GTA, NSC and my team at the MCY&S and all of the other sports associations who have worked faithfully with me.” He explained; his ministry is tasked with the building and transforming all of the areas of sport, which is extremely important for the welfare and the well being of our country. He went on to say, “It is my believe that sports programme is what will develop our talents, and turn us into world class players. So I have every confidence that we have the ability, we have the talent, and now we have the facilities.” According to him, “It matters when, we see our athletes internationally or we see our players going to another country to compete. We deserve more. We know we deserve more. We can achieve more and we will because we must.”
