Kaieteur News – Gentrification is a big word about big people transforming poor, run-down areas into havens for the wealthy. Gentrification is like Cinderella’s fairy Godmother that turned a pumpkin into a luxury carriage, except that gentrification is about turning ghettos into commercial districts.
The Opposition believes that this enchantment is happening in La Penitence and Albouystown, where the Punt Trench Dam into a promenade. But hey, why stop there? Why not bring back the good old Punt Trench Canal, slap a lid on it, and voila! We have a dual-purpose drainage canal and recreational park. The Dutch would be so proud. But we’re not that creative, so we’ll just trade greenery for concrete promenades and hope our drainage problems magically disappear.
The city is apparently running out of space for commercial businesses. The north of the city is already bursting at the seams with businesses, and traffic congestion is the latest fashion statement. So naturally, we need to develop new business areas. However, the big shots aren’t too keen on setting up shop south of Agricola. That is too far from the action! So we are told that they may be eyeing up La Penitence and Albouystown with the intention of buying up properties at bargain prices, and transforming the area into the newest commercial district.
But let’s not forget about the poor citizens. They must tread carefully through the treacherous flood waters of gentrification. It may sound like a dream, but in reality, it’s more like a nightmare. As soon as the big shots arrive, they’ll snatch up all the residential properties, turning humble homes into fancy commercial warehouses and super-stores. Isn’t progress simply marvelous?
Does this sound like a sound plan or a recipe for disaster? Only time will tell.
Talk half. Leff half!
