Kaieteur News – Two miners, Osborne and Collis Fredricks, were killed on Friday after the truck they were traveling in toppled down a hill along the Issano Trail, Mazaruni. Other passengers in the truck were also injured.
According to reports, the accident occurred sometime around 08:30hrs at 14 Miles Issano Trail, and involved motor lorry GVV 7484 owned and driven by 63-year-old Allen Wilson and eight other occupants.
The occupants were 24-year-old gold miner Ryan Herand of Lima Sands Essequibo, 41-year-old Abar Barker of Lot 1 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), 26-year-old gold miner Kelron Jones, 53-year-old gold miner Joeseph Sahoye of Lot 5 Zeelugt East Bank Essequibo (EBE), 38-year-old Shawn Pedro of Four Miles Potaro Road, Bartica, 19-year-old gold miner Dexter Bruton, 26-year-old gold miner Osborne Fredricks of Wakapoa, Lower Pomeroon, and 31-year-old gold miner Collis Fredricks of Wakapoa, who were all seated at the back in the tray of the lorry.
It was reported to the police that the truck was traveling north along the trail and was ascending a hill when the driver lost control of the truck which ended up turning turtle on its left side. As a result, the occupants fell onto the trail and the truck ended up pinning Osborne and Collis Fredricks.
All the occupants were picked up by police and taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital where Pedro, Bruton, Sahoye, Jones and Baker were seen and examined by a doctor on duty who treated them for minor laceration about their bodies. Reports are that Osborne and Collis Fredricks were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said the driver was served with a notice of Intended Prosecution and is in custody assisting with the investigation.
