Kaieteur Sports – Tianna Springer, Jaheel Cornette and Ezekiel Newton registered Personal Best times in the their respective 200m semis yesterday to advance to the finals in the South American U20 Championships in Athletics.
Returning to the track in Bogota, Colombia one day after breaking the meet’s 400m record, Springer ran 24.07s to finish second behind Brazilian Sullen De Santanna (23.78s) but ahead of Venezuela’s Beynailis Cordoca (24.75s).
Springer is hunting an unpresented ‘double’, having already bagged Guyana’s first gold medal of the biennial event.
Karese Lloyd didn’t look her usual self in the women’s 200m, with her 25.78s time just good enough for fifth-place and will not seeing her advancing to today’s final.
Meanwhile, Jaheel Cornette and Ezekiel Newton will go head-to-head in today’s men’s 200m finals, after both sprinters were fast enough to advance.
Competing in the first group, Cornette finished third with a time of 21.39s behind winner Enoc Romero of Colombia (21.08s) and Brazilian Joao De Melo (21.33s).
Already securing a bronze medal in the Men’s 100m, Newton looked at ease on his way to winning his race, running 21.10s.
Newton’s time was the fastest on the track over the distance as he sets his sight on adding a gold medal to his collection of achievements.
The curtains will come down today on the 2023 South American in Athletics Championships with the Guyanese trio aiming to leave their mark at the prestigious event.
