Dear Editor,
Public officers, or if I can put this in simple language, those at the top who purport to be our leaders must give an account for themselves, I am talking about those who lead must give an account of their stewardship when called to do so. For this same reason an Integrity Commission was set up to deal with such matters. The Integrity Commission is not a new phenomenon, because it is the standard practice in all civilized jurisdictions, in the known world where this operation is applied, so an Integrity Commission comes as nothing new.
Nor could anyone come up with the lame excuse that it is an entity that was set up by the governing party to spy on the assets of the opposition. An Integrity Commission requires the statement of assets owned by government as well as Opposition Members of Parliament; none is excluded, as it is equally binding on all office holders.
Now, The Government side of the house have declared their honesty in this regard and have declared their assets to the Integrity Commission, whereas The Opposition have not, they for some unexplained reason have withheld theirs from the Commission. In my book this constitutes a breach of contract and tantamount to misconduct in public office. I would further add that it weakens their moral standing in the eyes of the wider public out there, and as such they lack the moral fibre to speak on any matter of transparency or good governance.
In this regard, I call on the Integrity Commission to bring into force the full brunt of the law on those defaulters, as it would go a far way in bringing civility back into public office.
Respectfully submitted,
Neil Adams
