– Team, officials pay courtesy call to Minister Ramson before departure
Athletes, officials and representatives of the AAG made a courtesy call to Minister Charles Ramson prior to their departure to Bogota, Colombia for the South American U20 Championships.
Kaieteur Sports – A team of seven athletes and three officials from Guyana departed for Colombia yesterday to compete in the South American Athletics U-20 Championships in Bogota, Colombia, from May 19-21.
The team is spearheaded by CARIFTA Games 400m gold medallist, Tianna Springer (200m, 400m), and includes Ezekiel Newton (100m, 200m), Wesley Noble (800m), Karese Lloyd (100m, 200m), Jaheel Corvette (100m, 200m), Erin Leitch (long jump), and Isiah Trim (high jump).
All eyes will be in CARIFTA Games 400m gold medallist Tianna Springer at the South American U20 athletics Championship in Colombia.
The unit will be accompanied by Kenisha Headley (Manager), Johnny Gravesande (Coach), and Akeem Stewart (Massage Therapist).
Prior to their departure, the team met with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. and Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle in the boardroom of the Ministry on Main Street.
The meeting was in keeping with the new mandate of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Ministry to meet with teams representing Guyana prior to departure and upon their return.
The team’s sojourn is being supported by the NSC and by extension the Ministry of Sport. The top brass of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport, the Guyana Olympic Association, the NSC, and sponsors for their continued support to the association and the development of Track and Field.
The Guyanese team is expected to put up a strong showing at the event, with Tianna Springer leading the way.
Springer has been in excellent form this season, winning gold at the CARIFTA Games and setting a personal best time in the process. She will be looking to continue her winning ways in Bogota and bring home another medal for Guyana.
The rest of the team is also expected to perform well, with several athletes having shown promise in recent competitions.
Wesley Noble, for example, has been in good form in the 800m and could be a medal contender in Bogota. Karese Lloyd and Jaheel Corvette are also expected to do well in their respective events.
