– Guyanese athlete impress at NACAC New Life Invitational
Kaieteur Sports – Guyanese athlete Aliyah Abrams has made history by setting a new national record in the 400m event. The NACAC New Life Invitational Women’s 400m event in The Bahamas witnessed Abrams finish in first place with a remarkable time of 50.20s, breaking Aliann Pompey’s 14-year-old national record.
The event saw Abrams compete against some of the best athletes in the region, including Charokee Young, Roxana Gomez, and Stacey-Ann Williams.
Sada Williams of Barbados, who won gold at the 2023 Commonwealth Games and a World Championship Bronze Medal, finished fifth with a time of 51.25s.
Pompey had set the previous national record of 50.71s at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany, in 2009. However, Abrams’ impressive performance has now earned her the title of the fastest Guyanese athlete in the 400m event.
Just last month, Abrams became the first Guyanese athlete to qualify for the 2023 World Championships in Track and Field, after her blistering 50.77 seconds run in the Women’s 400m at the Tom Jones Invitational.
While Abrams’ national record-breaking performance is undoubtedly impressive, she will need to replicate or better it during the Olympic Qualification period from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. The qualifying time for the women’s 400m event at the Olympics is 50.95s.
Abrams was the only Guyanese athlete to run the qualifying standard time for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
