– Oceaneering International announced as sponsor
Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Hockey Board has announced the relaunch of its Under 14 Indoor League, which is set to take place under a new sponsor this year, Oceaneering International.
Tournament Coordinators, Dominique Fraser and Aniyah Jardine of the GHB along with Paul Stone in Country Superintendent and Natasha Jairam-Abai Administrative Coordinator of Oceaneering.
The tournament was first initiated in 2017 and was the first of its kind to be held in schools, providing a significant boost to the development of the game, with over 100 children competing each year.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament has not been held in the last three years, resulting in a loss of momentum.
However, despite this gap, the tournament has successfully achieved its goal of furthering the junior development of players.
In fact, some of the winners of the Most Goals and MVP prizes in 2017, such as Baraka Garnett and Tahrea Garnett, recently represented Guyana at the Junior PanAm Championships held in Barbados last April.
Additionally, Abosaide Cadogan, who won the Most Goals prize in the Girls category in 2017, has represented Guyana on both the Junior and Senior National teams since her debut in this tournament
The tournament follows a 4-aside format with a maximum of 10 registered players per team. This year, new schools such as Richard Ishmael Secondary School and Cummings Lodge Secondary School will participate alongside regular teams from Saints Hockey Club (SHC), Hikers (HHC), GCC, North Georgetown Multilateral, and St Joseph’s High School.
The tournament will utilize the auditoriums of Saints Stanislaus College, St Joseph’s High School, and Marian Academy, with a different venue being used each week.
The league will be held every Friday with games starting at 4:00 pm and concluding at 7:00 pm. The action commences this Friday at Saints Stanislaus College.
