Kaieteur Sports – Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Season Five is all set to kick off on Sunday, May 14, at the Eve Leary Sports Ground, Kingston, Georgetown.
Reigning champions Fruta Conquerors Football Club will take on Guyana Police Force Football Club in the opening match of the country’s premier men’s football competition, making its return for the first time since 2019.
This year’s league will see the participation of ten teams, including Guyana Defence Force Football Club, Den Amstel Football Club, Victoria Kings Football Club, Buxton United Sports Club, Milerock Football Club, Ann’s Grove Football Club, Guyana Police Force Football Club, Santos Football Club, and the reigning champions.
The fixtures for Season Five were recently sent to all the participating teams, and they will be aiming for a positive start to secure enough points to make it to the championship at the end of the season.
The league will witness Guyana’s top senior players competing against each other in one of the most competitive local leagues.
According to GFF Acting Technical Director Bryan Joseph, Season Five promises to deliver exciting football to fans. He further added that the league would offer a great opportunity for players to showcase their talent and gain global exposure, since it will be broadcast on the FIFA+ platform.
The Grand Opening Ceremony of the league will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
The ceremony will include a march pass of all ten teams, and fans are encouraged to come out in large numbers and support their favourite teams.
The league will see clubs playing several rounds of football, and the two clubs scoring the most points will advance to the two-million dollars’ championship match.
Victorious clubs will be awarded three points, while a draw gets teams one point each. Defeated teams will not be awarded points on the overall table. Three points will be deducted from teams that forfeit a match.
More than four million dollars will be awarded to clubs and players participating in the two-month league. The champions will automatically qualify for the CONCACAF / Caribbean Shield Championships.
