Dear Editor
Kaieteur News – New Amsterdam is in the Ancient County of Berbice, a place where the first settlers landed a town. It is the second largest municipal urban area in Guyana, it is also a bastion of the PNC, a place where they hold total control, power and influence.
For decades this town has been a stomping ground for that party, with very little changes taking place there, someone even jokingly referring to the town as being easily recognizable by Christopher Columbus if he would have returned. Because New Amsterdam is still the old sleepy town with its dilapidated infrastructure and archaic ways of doing things.
Well, all of that is about to change with the PPP/C taking over the reins of power in the ancient town. Things are about to change, because wherever the PPP/C is there is bound to be a forward and upward trajectory. The point I am making is, with the PPP/C comes progress and real development, I am talking about development in the truest sense of the word, development in every sector of society.
Some of the areas where this town would move forward is in infrastructural works such as our roads bridges, and a modern approach to the zoning of The Central Business District (CBD). An upgrade to our health system, that is the general hospital, which in my view should be relocated and properly equipped with 21st Century amenities. Our country’s lone psychiatric hospital is a shameful sight to behold, this has to change! Its present function as a “prison for mad people,” needs to be brought into conformity with modern health standards and a hospice for those who are mentally challenged.
Suburban squatting has to be regularized and brought into modern township areas with potable water, electricity and proper telecommunication.
The list is by no means exhaustible, but must be tackled with urgency it deserves. We must move forward into the modern era of development at a rapid pace.
Respectfully
Neil Adams
