Kaieteur Sports – “Relays on the Grass” is an initiative that was the brain child of a group of officials who saw some simple needs of track and field that were being ignored.
They took it upon themselves to experiment with some specific objectives in mind. With the old proverb that says ‘killing two birds with one stone’ in mind, the individuals set out to keep world athletics goal in mind, taking the sport to the people, identifying new talent, recruiting volunteers, providing grass surface competitions for athletes and raising funds, with this, relays on the grass was birthed.
The organizers thought it necessary that competition be removed from the club level and give athletes as well as coaches a trial at competing with other team members since its difficult sometimes for athletes and coaches to gel when traveling as a country as against a club.
Schools around the venue were invited to showcase new talent that may be going un-noticed. This event attracted international competition and is proving even before its execution to be growing on its own.
All those having the growth of track and field as a country at heart are always welcomed to share ideas and give comments or even be brave enough to dive into this selfless idea of developing our own talent.
And for all the fans of great and clean competition please don’t fail to join us at Enmore community center ground on May 5 for the inaugural event.
The schools scheduled to attend this event include President’s College, Golden Grove Secondary, Paradise Primary, Hope Secondary and Ann’s Grove. Other teams expected to compete will hail from Georgetown, Linden, Berbice, East Bank, East Coast and West Demerara.
