Kaieteur Sports – New skipper Hemnarine Chattergoon has expressed confidence that Cambridge Jaguars will be triumphant this year in the Canadian Premier Softball Cricket League’s various tournaments.
The action is set to kick off later this month and the former Guyana and West Indies youth batsman strongly believes his team is equipped to dominate proceedings.
The right-handed Chattergoon has taken over the captaincy from the vastly experienced Shilender Singh.
Last year, Cambridge Jaguars failed to reach any of the finals in all three formats (20, 15 and 10-overs), but Chattergoon is more optimistic now they can do well.
“We have to go out there and play positive cricket from ball one; in 2022, the guys showed a lot of determination and character but I think the other teams just played better cricket,” Chattergoon related.
VP Boys were rampant last year surging to all three championship victories.
For this season, the 45-year-old Chattergoon, who also represented his adopted country Canada at the highest level, made mention that the lineup is strengthened with the addition of few new and exciting players who have got a wealth of experience.
“I love the team for this year; looks very formidable and we are aiming for success by the completion of the season,” Chattergoon, whose younger brother Sewnarine Chattergoon played test cricket for West Indies, declared.
According to an enthusiastic Chattergoon, assurance of good all-round performances is expected from the likes of Rajkumar Budhram, Rishi Harricharan, Teddy Nankisore, Chien Gittens, Riaz Kadir, Amar Singh, Rajesh Willie, Mahendra Jaipersaud and Ramez Mohamed among others.
Quizzed on how he rated the tournaments last year, the softball all-rounder Chattergoon responded: “Was very competitive with a number of teams displaying fine performances; every side was out there to win the championships as we saw and that is the competitiveness we are anticipating again.”
Chattergoon’s predecessor Singh also informed the team is rearing to go and once play to the best of their abilities, Jaguars should able to roar in every facet of the game.
Singh has been a long-standing player of the side and shared that Cambridge Jaguars always possessed a quality team. In 2023, they made their debut at the abovementioned League but prior to that, they had done admirably well at the Ontario Round-Arm Softball Cricket Association’s different competitions, too.
In 2021, Cambridge Jaguars participated in the 20-overs final against eventual winner Sunshine.
“As a team, we [are] just getting better and better; everyone had taken up his responsibility and again I am confident the old and new players will play with same level of commitment,” Singh stated.
Statistically, Jaipersaud recorded a century to be among the top-players while Nankisore tallied up 17 wickets in their nine matches of which seven were victorious in the 20-overs version.
Notably, the team is owned by popular Canada-based Guyanese businessman Satishwar Persaud, a Realtor of Adana Homes.
