Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep concern about the escalating threats faced by journalists in Guyana, and the danger this poses to press freedom. As a cornerstone of democracy, a free and independent press is essential for keeping citizens informed and holding those in power accountable.
In recent months, there has been an alarming increase in attacks against journalists in Guyana, including threats and harassment. These attacks appear to be motivated by a desire to silence critical reporting and intimidate those who would speak truth to power.
It is crucial that the government of Guyana takes swift and decisive action to protect the safety and well-being of journalists in the country. This includes thoroughly investigating these attacks and holding those responsible, accountable for their actions. The government should also take proactive steps to create an environment where journalists can do their work without fear of reprisal.
As journalists, it is our responsibility to stand up for press freedom and condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms. We must work together to ensure that journalists in Guyana and around the world can do their jobs without fear of violence or persecution.
In conclusion, the attacks on journalists in Guyana represent a serious threat to the principles of democracy, and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The government of Guyana must take immediate action to protect journalists, and we as journalists must continue to advocate for press freedom and the principles that uphold our society.
Sincerely,
Wayne Lyttle
