Dear Editor,
Daily, Guyana is sinking into the pit of bad governance. The police force is a puppet of the Government, masquerading around doing political works such as Men On Mission. The constitutional institutions are flooded with party supporters. The media is dominated by government, no space for independent views. Award of contracts are corrupt. Too many square pegs in round holes. Victimization of those who dare to question the government policy.
Haphazard decisions every day. The excesses are overbearing. Every day, the President’s office finds a reason to host an extravagant reception. Every day is a party. This is the weakest opposition in the history of Guyana. Every government press conference, journalists with a different view are treated with scorn. The silence is deafening. Come 2025, Guyanese must demand better. Where is the international community who fought for democracy?
Except APNU+AFC, post 2020 all the small parties have been swallowed up. Guyana needs them at this time. With oil, it is easy to slip into dictatorship rule, as such more voices are needed to be heard. One has to ask if the small parties are also afraid to speak. If they continue to speak out with the same energy they did during the elections fiasco, then today this country will be better governed. Many of them have taken up government positions and as such feel that they have done their part. Others have realised that it was necessary for them to exist since it helped PPP/C voice to be amplified in the 2020 elections. A weak opposition and civil society makes it easy for the government to become a dictator since winning elections will become easy by buying votes.
ANUG with its battery of lawyers are not even playing a role that civil society expects. The Youth Movement, well it’s embarrassing to see that this group wanted youth votes and can’t even be serious on its position. The URP is confusing- its leader sits on a government body, praises the government every minute and yet wants to be termed a party. The Liberty and Justice Party made a mockery of its constituent. Its leader sat in Parliament for over two years and made no impact. Mr. Badal started a great movement, Guyana needs you Sir. The Local Government Election was a good starting point for small parties. But their motives are clear- they are only interested in power and not good governance. It is shameful that not much have been done post 2020 by these parties. They have simply dropped the momentum. Come 2025, what will they tell persons again to garner votes? We can laugh and insult all we want about Glenn Lall, but at the end of the day, there is no one as brave as him, Mr. GHK Lall, and Mr. Chris Ram. Those who aspire for public offices must be serious and should never take buyout or be intimidated by the government.
Yours truly,
P. Singh
