Dear Editor,
With the consistency redolent of someone eagerly earning their stripes (and salary) Dr. Randolph Persaud, the new propaganda czar for the Office of the President, uniformly scolds individuals and organisations in the press for not aligning with his vision of a “One Guyana,” which appears to be synonymous with “PPP Guyana”.
The tone and substance of Dr. Persaud’s correspondence are becoming more and more reminiscent of the days of “command and control” particularly when it comes to glorifying the leader and his party. This trend was particularly noticeable in his most recent letter of April 19 in Kaieteur News titled, “Familiar opposition personalities continue the misinformation campaign.”
One wonders what informs this level of intolerance and mounting hysteria given that those who control the oil economy purportedly have everything in their grasp.
However, one thing that caught my attention was his reference to Frederick Kissoon. He wrote, “those like Freddie Kissoon, who are critical of the duplicity of these so-called civil society groups, have been fired, sidelined, and disciplined by those rich families that control the established media houses in Guyana.” (is Persaud including the Guyana Times here?)
This is a noteworthy statement, as in 2010 Dr. Persaud did not afford Kissoon such generosity when Persaud, in concert with his group of party elements from the PPP attempted to interrupt Kissoon’s conference presentation at the National Library forum.
In a letter penned after that event, written in response to a letter of solidarity with Kissoon, Persaud described Kissoon’s paper and presentation variously as “extremist rhetoric”, “inflammatory appeals to race”, “diabolical speech”, and “intellectual atrocity”. One thing that sure hasn’t changed is Persaud’s colourful language to currently describe individuals and groups who do not share the government’s views. Although it is entirely reasonable for individuals to revise their opinions on people, organisations, events, and history, one would think this should be done both with civility and some reflection. Lastly, considering Dr. Persaud’s inclination to pose open questions to individuals and groups whom he glibly associates with the political opposition, I would ask him in turn whether he has changed his views on Kissoon’s paper which provided a vital evaluation of state racism in Guyana?
Yours sincerely,
Nigel Westmaas
