Dear Editor,
In the recent budget debates in Parliament, PPPC parliamentarians in their usual style wasted no opportunity to remind APNU+AFC about its bad management and policies. But, this is the classic case of the ‘pot telling the kettle, its bottom black’.
It would appear that on the President’s outreaches, school children are being asked or used to welcome him. We used to hear that Burnham and Granger liked these pageantries. How different is President Ali? Considering the distance from Georgetown to Berbice or Linden, why does he need to be travelling in helicopter? How much does it cost the nation for one of those trips? These distances are traversed daily by the ordinary citizen, why can’t the President do the same? The same pageantry is enjoyed by the PPP, no different.
The Minister of Education should be concerned that her children are out welcoming the President instead of being in the school. Parents should have a say whether they want their children to be in a classroom or out in the hot sun waiting the President’s arrival. This happened recently at Linden, Berbice and many other places. This Covid-19 caused tremendous learning loss and, therefore, children should not be used for political purposes. The President has enough persons employed by the government who can carry out welcoming duties. There are 10-day workers, regional officials, NDC workers, other government officials, spare our children.
The media should update us on the number of receptions, lunches, dinners and fetes hosted by the PPP since it assumed office in 2020. It’s shameful to see how the oil money is used to satisfy their immediate needs, but for citizens, their benefits will be in the future.
The PPP must be reminded of its founder’s words, ‘ we can’t want to live a Cadillac lifestyle in donkey cart economy’. Save taxpayers’ money and let our children be in schools.
Yours truly,
K. Singh
