Formation of Horse owners and other organizations
Kaieteur News – Following the convening and successful hosting of a horse owners and connections meeting by the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) at their Bush Lot Farm Corentyne Berbice venue, there has been a resounding call for the urgent regularisation of the sport. There was a resounding call for the passage of the Horse Racing Legislation by the government.
Those present at the meeting including owners, jockeys, trainers, grooms and others were adamant that it was time that the Government of Guyana stop promising and act in the interest of the preservation of the sport.
A draft copy of the Legislation was handed to the Government almost two decades ago, and nothing much has been heard from the government since.
The attendees were loud in praise of Mrs. Chan Kennard and the KMTC for convening the meeting which give them, especially the small horse owners a chance to have their voices heard. They said it is good that something has started. They commended Mrs. Chan Kennard and the KMTC for taking the initiative.
Mrs. Kennard is the Honorary President of the KMTC, having taken over the reins from her late husband retired Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Cecil Kennard.
A number of those present were not in agreement with the way the sport is being administered stating that it is being taken over by the “Big Players” and are calling for more transparency.
There was also a resounding call for the formation of horse owners and trainers associations which will give them a voice in the way things are being done.
According to Mrs. Kennard she wanted to hear from owners, especially the small owners and get an input from them on how the sport could be better administered.
Mrs. Kennard stated that the club has taken the decision to help the small owners. She said that from now on the club will only be organizing and sponsoring races for G and lower horses.
The club has set its next race date for around CARICOM, more information will be made available shortly.
A copy of the Horse Racing Legislation was compiled by the late horse racing stalwart Senior Council Marcel Crawford with inputs from other former stalwarts the likes of the late Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil Kennard and Inshanally “Sunny” Habibulla.
The KMTC is considered one of the premiere horseracing entities in Guyana. (Samuel Whyte)
