– 14 wickets fall on first day
Kaieteur News – The first round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCY&S), Government of Guyana (GOG) Boys Under-19 Inter County Three-Day cricket tournament commenced yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda as Essequibo U19 battled with the Select XI, Select XI won the toss and batted first.
Select XI were in a good position at the end of the first day seeing Kevin Kristen stroking a classy half century (63) in the first session. Ezekiel Wilson also batted good for his 57 runs in the last two sessions as Select XI were all out for 209 runs in the first innings. Arun Persaud was the pick of Essequibo bowlers grabbing 5-69, while Joash Charles finished 2-28.
Early on, Rashad Gaffur was the first wicket to fall which joined Marlon Ramsauce and Kevin Kristen. The duo came together pushing the score pass the fifty-run mark in the 21st over. Arun Persaud claimed his first wicket four balls later; trapping Ramsauce LBW for 12 runs. Joash Charles troubled the new batter (Sachin Balgobin) drawing into the drive; Singh nicking it pass the wicketkeeper for four. Kristen went on to make a magnificent half century; getting there in the 23rd over with a gentle push into the on-side for a single.
At lunch Select XI were 92-2 Kristen unbeaten on 60 runs including four boundaries and Balgobin on 17 runs. After the break, Persaud picked up his second wicket; Balgobin out LBW for 17 runs, Select XI then lost their fourth wicket as Kristen was dismissed having his off stumps knocked out the ground from a beauty out-swinger from Charles. Kristen departed for 63 runs, Select XI now 104-4 at the end 32nd over.
Select XI, despite losing two wickets in quick succession right after the lunch interval, Nityanand Mathura and Ezekiel Wilson toiled pushing the score up to 155-4 after 40 overs. Wilson was unbeaten on 46 runs and Mathura on 23 runs. Wilson later brought up his half century with a superb cover-drive for four runs but subsequently had to leave the field to attend to his injured finger, he retired on 52 not out.
Persaud grabbed two more wickets as Select XI found themselves at 189-6. Wilson returned to the crease in the 59th over. Select XI posted 190-6 at tea. Essequibo returned to the pitch to get the job done; Persaud later picked up his fifth wicket of the match; trapping another Select XI batter Matthew Pataya LBW. Wilson was eventually dismissed for 57 runs; hitting seven fours.
Select XI lower order continued to crumble at 202-8 with the last two wickets falling for seven runs as they mustered 209-10 in 71.3 overs.
Essequibo in reply, lost their opening batter Rajendra Rambali in the second ball of the innings; caught at slip for duck off the bowling of Shiv Harripersaud. Dillion Ramsaroop struk in his first over removing Harold DeMattos caught down the leg side; wicketkeeper Kristen completing an excellent catch to take the score to 8-2. Ramsaroop strike again; hitting the off stumps of Mohandass Surujpaul to push Essequibo unto the back-foot at a score of 21-3. Wilson were later introduced into the attack and imediately removed Nyhiem Khan for 15 runs. At Stumps Essequibo 51-4 in 16 overs. Ramsaroop finished 2-20 and Harripersaud 1-16.
Meanwhile at Everest, Demerara batted first and were dismissed for 122 runs in 50.1 overs, Rivaldo Phillips top scored with 57 runs. Mavindra Dindyal also chipped in with 20 runs as Berbice bowlers shared the wickets; Jeremy Sandia 3-33, Isaiah Thorne 2-25, Jonathan Rampersaud 2-16 and Leon Cecil 2-14. In reply Berbice put on 111-6 from 38 overs. Tomani Ceasar stroke s solid 32 runs with Jonathan Rampersaud and Leon Cecil unbeaten on 12 and 13 runs respectively. Mavindra Dindyal 2-16 and Alvin Mohabir 2-31.
Day Two action starts at 10:00 hours today at both venues.
