Kaieteur News – The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) 2023 Independence Three-Stage race event is scheduled to pedal off on Saturday 13th – 14th May. Cycling fans are dared to witness the 40th edition of the nation’s most prestige cycling meet which unfolds this year.
The event has an estimated 1.2 million in cash and prizes up for grabs at this year’s race, which is shared between the four different categories. Last year, saw the crowning of Akil Campbell out of Trinidad and Tobago as he pedaled to supremacy.
The event encompasses of the Elite race, as well as a Junior’s category, Veteran and Prime category race. First stage starts at Corriverton and proceeds to New Amsterdam, Second Stage rolls off from Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue (Georgetown) and the final Stage will leave from Kara Kara, Linden to culminate at Homestretch Avenue.
First prize of the Elite race stands at whooping $150,000, while second, third, fourth, fifth place finish will also be rewarded substantially.
Winners of the Vets race will be rewarded $70,000, $50,000 and $30,000 for first, second and third place finish respectively, while Junior’s will be rewarded within the same margin. For the Prime race a small monetary award is set aside for every participant involved.
Stage prize for this event will range from $30,000 to $15,000. All winners will also be given trophies for participation.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Linden Dowridge says, he is optimistic of a bright future for Cycling under the present Government.
According to Dowridge, “Over the past years, the Federation has fostered a good relationship with the National Sports Commission (NSC), and we are getting overwhelming support from Director of Sports Steve Ninvalle and his team.”
The 2023 Independence 3-Stage race is also sponsored by the National Sports Commission. Further details regarding this event will be published as soon as it is made available to Kaieteur News.
