Apr 14, 2023 Letters
Dear Editor,
One has to force oneself to read the words coming from the person who often signs his letters as “Elder.” This time in K.N. 4/12/2023, he writes; “History has shown that if our young people do not demand a change of attitude, things will stagnate and the wealth will not be evenly distributed.” I wonder, has the Elder forgotten when he and his founder leader drove almost all the young people from the silent majority to seek education/safety/life on other Shores away from Guyana? When National Services was created to stem the huge influx of kids of the very silent majority who were seeking higher education? Did those young people not matter? They were not allowed a chance for higher education much less dared to think about demanding for any right.(This is our truth and no matter who says that NS was good, just tell this to the many youths who fled these shores those dark days and you will surely get an earful of profanity.)
“Our people, particularly the young, must agitate for the somersault for our debilitating tit for tat politics and the regurgitation of half-truths about our history, and it is a good time for us to plug for authentic Press freedom, which means ending the state control of sections of the media, which I bet dare not publish this letter.” “Elder” further stated.
Is this another threat like the one Tacuma made; albeit “veiled?” What is this “regurgitation of half-truths?” Is it referring to the cockeyed ones that “Elder” keeps on plying in the newspapers’ columns? ”Elder” dares the media to publish his rants and diatribes then talks about “state control of sections of the media,” The gall of one whose administration was akin to a gulag on not only the free press but on all of Guyana. Every time the “Elder” sends another missive to the press, it is like what those who opposed the regime he was part and parcel of, wished they were allowed to do openly in those dark days. Today, that he can sit in the safety of his home and pen hogwash at the present Government is proof enough that he is enjoying the freedom that he and his Government denied many a Guyanese during his PNC regime. Enjoy this freedom, Hamilton Green, one that you, your Comrade Leader and Government, have denied many a Guyanese so many years ago. That you are calling for “agitation” is nothing new again too, is it?
Your truly,
N. Sahadeo
