Kaieteur News – An 18-year-old student of the University of Guyana died on Friday almost one week after he was beaten and stabbed during an armed robbery at a bar along the East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The victim was identified as Anil Jerry of Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge (ECD). Jerry was attacked around 22:30hrs last Sunday while having a drink with two female friends.
The owner of the bar told Kaieteur News that the attack took place in the outside section of the bar.
According to reports, several men wearing face masks approached and snatched one of Jerry’s female friends’ cellular phone.
Jerry reportedly intervened to stop the bandits from taking the woman’s phone and was badly beaten. The bandits allegedly gun butted him to the head and stabbed him to the neck. Jerry collapsed and gunshots were reportedly fired before the men made good their escape.
The victim was rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital and underwent surgery but did not fully recover. He was placed on a life support machine.
Subsequently, Jerry was reportedly transferred to Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal where he later succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
Following the news of his demise, his Facebook friends flooded the social media platforms with heartwarming posts.
He was described as a lover of football and dedicated student who was the valedictorian in high school.
One of his high school teachers said, “I knew since the day he entered the school, he would be the top student. His parents, villagers, teachers and friends were all proud of him. I can’t forget the happiness on his mom’s face when he was announced as the top performer”.
Jerry is originally from Jawalla, an Amerindian village located in Region Seven and after doing well at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), he applied to the University of Guyana and was accepted to pursue his studies.
Sadly, his life was snuffed out by bandits two days after completing his 18th birthday and before he completed his university education.
