Dear Editor,
In science fiction fantasy there is a theory that there is another parallel dimension similar to this one we live in where everyone has a twin of themselves. When you look at the way the many elites and politicians in society behave in their daily lives exploiting and oppress others below them, this theory has some merit, since when these same elites and politicians practice religion one would think these elites and politicians are the grace of holiness.
When poor people commit crimes for whatever reason, they usually accept their punishment from the justice system whatever that punishment is, and serve their time. The political and elite class however commit murder, robbery, fraud, corruption, and all kinds of assaults, sell out the patrimony of their citizens, and rig elections while the foreign elites rob countries of their resources, provide no protection, destroy the environment and propagate barefaced lying to the people, but these local and foreign elites get to walk freely in society and continue to perpetrate their crimes on Guyanese as there seems to be a different justice system for them.
When the coalition won the previous elections it was known as the David (Granger) and Moses (Nagamootoo) leadership that will make Guyana the promised land, we all saw what happened under their leadership, when the PPP won the last elections it was called the Bharat (Jagdeo) and Mohammed (Irfan Ali) leadership that will be bringing righteousness to Guyana, we can see what is happening under their leadership. Many of the political and elite class when doing religious functions or are in their respective places of worship would be fully dressed as per traditions while following the direction of their priests performing the religious function and while taking the oath of office they look so religious one wouldn’t believe they are capable of the wrongdoings they perpetrate.
I do wonder when it’s time for these wrongdoers to hold a holy book and do a personal prayer, what are they praying for, the strength to do more wrongs? or asking God for forgiveness for their wrongdoings? or they praying for something else. All the major religious organisations in Guyana are affiliated with political parties and nothing is wrong with this, but why do these organisations stay silent when these political parties do wrong on the people?
All religions teach us to stand up to injustice regardless of the source, so why the silence in regard to politicians’ wrongdoings? Every time there is a religious observance day of major religion in Guyana, politicians of all parties give their good gestures and best wishes to the people of that religion and this is very good, but where are these best wishes and good gestures from politicians to all citizens when it comes to Guyana’s resource wealth, oil wealth and national elections concession by the losing party?. Priests of all faiths in Guyana teach people to do the sacred parts of religious worship, like prayers, offerings, fasting, etc. which is admirable, but it should also be taught by religious officials and scholars that the major religions in Guyana, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity did not only practice the sacred part of their faiths but throughout ancient history and currently, they had to fight umpteenth wars and battles to protect their faith, their land, their wealth and their patrimony, so where is the fight from Guyana’s religious organisations for them and other Guyanese fair share of Guyana’s wealth? or do they want to continue asking for donations to run their religious institutions? or the only religious language we will hear from parliament is the sanctity of contract.
Regards,
Radeish David
