Dear Editor,
We wish to respond to a letter in today’s Kaieteur News by Leyland Chitlall Roopnaraine entitled “The speaker of the House”. First, the allegations made by Roopnarine have no factual basis. What is fact is that the Speaker’s work is guided by the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament. His actions are therefore no different from previous PNCR Speakers Dr. Barton Scotland and Raphael Trotman. During their time, Roopnarine kept quiet and never questioned the methods of those Speakers. By not mentioning this little fact, Roopnarine is attempting to question the professionalism and destroy the integrity of the Speaker of the Parliament.
Roopnarine should tell us how many PPP/C Bills were rejected by APNU+AFC during their 5-year term (2015-2020). Or tell us how many PPP/C Bills the Coalition allowed for tabling. Roopnarine equated the ugly behavior of several APNU+AFC MPs who attempted to steal the Mace in the plain view of the world with the solitary distasteful comment by a PPP/C MP who later apologized for that indiscretion. There is no equivalence here.
Secondly, Roopnarine knows fully well that a very prominent feature of the Parliament is the item questions to Ministers. We have noticed that there are many, many oral and written questions at every sitting, even during the last budget debate. Finally, he should list the bills which the opposition tabled that were rejected by the Speaker for discussion. Roopnarine is simply trying to undermine the credibility of the Government.
Yours etc.,
The Association of Concerned Guyanese (USA)
