MSC Executive say still in the dark of what the facility will look like
Kaieteur News – The Mackenzie Sports Club Executive/ Management Committee will on Saturday hold a special members meeting at the MSC Pavilion from 5.00PM.
This meeting at the headquarters of the oldest sports institution in Linden is highly anticipated following last October’s announcement by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson that the club has become the property of the government. Additionally, recent disclosures which suggest that cricket will be the central sport at this venue, which is known to have accommodated several others sports such as football, track and field among them, which from all appearances now seem to be unlikely, is further cause for concern.
On social media, a usually reliable source posted that “While the ground is built to international cricket standards and therefore able to host cricket matches, it will continue to serve as a football facility and also host other sport events.”
But some executives of the MSC doubt this being possible, because of the location of the cricket field and how it was built. An official said that the MSC was never consulted on the plans and no drawings were shared with them, hence no in-put on the design and that is what will eventually prove disastrous.
Since the announcement in October 2020 that the Government of Guyana had identified that the MSC will be one of three multipurpose facilities across Guyana, several questions were posed to the management of the club.
At all times the executives said they were unable to say much about the design as there were no consultations with them despite several requests to the government.
Now that the cricket area is almost done the attendant problems with regards the playing of football are clear to see and for this it would be interesting what the feedback will be come Saturday.
According to Minister of Sport Charles Ramson, who met with some MSC Executives on Tuesday 11th , October, in Linden, the MSC is now owned by Government after the National Industrial Company Inc. Limited (NICIL) transferred it to the Government of Guyana.
However, several members and former members both local and overseas have commented on this development stating that the Club was a gift to the Club and the community.
Ramson said that the MSC which was identified as one of three to be financed by Government to be multipurpose facilities across Guyana, would become one like the National Stadium on completion, having the capacity to hold international cricket and football in keeping with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and world governing football body FIFA.
In fact, the sport minister said for government to acquire a grant from the Chinese Government to fund the building of the pavilion and a new structure; government had to show ownership, hence seemingly the announcement that around April last year, papers were handed over to show government ownership. An executive said this will be challenged.
But, members and residents are not comfortable with this since it could mean the removal of control of the club by an executive and members and as such are likely to seek means to counter such claims that the MNSC is now owned by the government if Guyana. This will be one of a number of matters which will be raised on Saturday at this very important meeting.
The meeting is to be chaired by President Avery Trim and General Secretary Joseph Chapman and while the transfer matter is key among the issues at hand, the functions of the club moving forward is high on what has caused anxiety among the community at large.
